Description of Role/Responsibilities:

The Data Translation Engineer plays a pivotal role in the successful delivery of our client’s projects and providing the support service, for which our customers hold us in high esteem. Due to growing demand for our services, we are looking to recruit a Data Translation Engineer to join our successful and friendly team. The ideal professional for the role is a flexible problem solver with excellent communication skills and a detail-oriented mindset.

The role of the Data Translation Engineer is to develop and support new and existing data translation maps and the implementations of data communications with Trading Partners. The proportion of time spent by the Data Translation Engineer between developing/maintaining maps, and support duties relating to these maps and communications, will vary according to the level of demand.

Within our office, some of the software technologies currently used are:

  • IBM WebSphere Transformation Extender.
  • MS-SQL (T-SQL).
  • Microsoft software, including MS Office (most notably Excel, Outlook & OneDrive).
  • A range of communications facilities, both developed in-house and third party solutions, such as AS2, FTP, SFTP, HTTP, Email, Webservices and VAN. 
  • A range of data formats such as Peppol, EDIFACT, Tradacoms, XML variants, X12, as well as client-specific formats.

 

The Data Translation Engineer’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Liaising with clients and their Trading Partners to establish detailed requirements within an agreed project scope.
  • Developing efficient data translation maps converting between the agreed formats.
  • Maintaining existing data translation maps.
  • Setting up Trade Agreements, defining the documents exchanged between Trading Partners.
  • Setting up data communications connections with Trading Partners using a variety of protocols.
  • Liaising with Trading Partners to test data translation maps and communications.
  • Debugging any mapping issues raised by software testers, the EDI Plus Support Team and Trading Partners.
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation.
  • Customer and internal liaison (with Project Managers, for example) by email, Teams and phone.

 

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Developing own skills in relevant technologies, data format and communications facilities.
  • Assisting other staff and teams to diagnose issues and deal with Trading Partners.
  • Assisting in the maintenance and testing of relevant software facilities, both developed in-house and third party solutions.
  • Assisting with identification of system problems and limitations, and contributing to the process of continuous improvement.

 

Job Requirements and Skills

  • You enjoy applying logic and performing technical tasks.
  • Qualifications in subjects such as Maths, ICT, Physics or Accounting.
  • Team player – must thrive working as part of a team, but also be able to work independently and prioritise your workload based on project timescales.
  • An analytical approach to problem solving.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and focus on accurate outcomes.  
  • Good IT literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft software (Excel, in particular).
  • Flexibility, willingness to learn.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a professional demeanour.
  • Customer service mentality and ability to communicate well with a variety of people, ranging from non-technical to EDI specialists.
  • An understanding of business document data, such as Orders, Delivery Notes and Invoices.
  • Some programming and/or database experience.
  • Knowledge or experience of data communication protocols such as SFTP, AS2 & HTTP Post.
  • A desire to develop your skills and experience in a dynamic environment.
  • Relevant experience of working in an office environment.
