Baking for a Cause: How Workplace Bake Sales Turned into a Charity Success

In today's fast-paced corporate environment, finding ways to build camaraderie and give back to the community can be challenging. Yet, here at EDI Plus we recently demonstrated that charity fundraising can blend seamlessly with workplace culture, all through the simple yet powerful act of sweet and savoury bake sales.

Identifying the Cause

EDI Plus were approached by NHS Plymouth Hospitals Charity to be part of their NHS 75 for 75 initiative, and become one of 1,000 legends, each raising £75 over the course of a year. The social team at EDI Plus organised both fun and effective ways to raise funds for the charity.

Employee Involvement

The key to the success of the fundraising events was the enthusiastic employee involvement. EDI Plus encouraged employees from all departments to participate, whether by baking, volunteering to help with the sale, or simply purchasing the baked goods.

Making a Difference

In November 2023, the EDI Plus Bake Sale raised £355, and the hotly contested Bake-Off competition was won by the following members of team:

·       The cake sold in record time = Rich’s madeira cake, decorated with the charity’s logo

·       Homemade cake sold in the quickest time = Jess’ chocolate cake

·       Homemade cake sold the second quickest = Danny’s Victoria Sponge

In December 2023, the EDI Plus team kicked off the festive period with a staff Christmas raffle, which raised a further £75, increasing our total to an impressive £430. The challenge was then set by the EDI Plus Operations Manager to reach a new target of £500. In July 2024, EDI Plus “Stepped Back in Time" and organised a Retro Savoury Sale at Plymouth Science Park, where they raised a further £160.

Fundraising Success

The fundraising was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of community within Plymouth Science Park and the potential for positive change when people come together for a cause. It highlights that, even in a corporate setting, simple acts of kindness and collaboration can lead to significant impacts. As a result of the various fundraising activities and donations received, EDI Plus were able to surpass their target of £500 and raise a total of £620 for Plymouth Hospitals Charity.
